5 Questions to Ask Yourself to Discover Your Freelance Niche

Finding your freelancing niche can be a crucial step in expanding your freelance business.

There’s a reason why the saying “The Riches are in the Niche” has practically become a cliche in modern business (there’s even a book by the same name).

That’s because figuring out how to find your freelance specialization allows you to tap into something unique. At first glance, it is counter-intuitive: a smaller audience should imply fewer opportunities, right?

However, in many circumstances, the exact opposite is true.

When you discover your freelance specialty, you present yourself as an expert to your target audience. When you become an expert, you may charge more because the demand for your freelance specialty expertise grows.

Finding freelance expertise can result in an influx of new clients and cash. However, with so many freelance ideas available, narrowing it down to a single area might be difficult.

So today, I’ll walk you through some questions you can ask yourself to establish your freelancing specialization while still performing work you enjoy without losing clients.

Here are five things to ask yourself to help you find your freelance niche:

1. What type of employment do I prefer?

While this list of questions is not in any specific order, I believe it is vital, to begin with, the subject of job satisfaction.

Everything relies on this question for me. If you choose a freelance specialization that you despise, you will be stuck performing something you despise for the foreseeable future.

Indeed, you may become renowned as the “go-to” person for work you loathe. That would be a colossal failure.

So, to begin, ask yourself: what kind of freelance work do I see myself doing for the remainder of my career?

Of course, you don’t have to do it forever (that’s a long time), but it’s a good idea to start with work in a freelance field you’re interested in.

2. What type of work already pays well for me?

Of course, having fun at work does not pay the bills. After all, your freelance business is a business, not a hobby. So the next issue is which freelance niche has the biggest revenue potential.

Depending on where you are in your freelancing business, you are probably already working with clients that engage you for a range of services.

One freelancer I know provides video services, social media management, and copywriting—three very diverse abilities.

However, as you try to narrow down your freelance expertise, think about which services you already get paid more for.

If it also works that you enjoy, you’re on your way to identifying the ideal freelance specialty.

If not, consider the second and third most profitable services you provide. If there is still no match, you will need to devise a strategy to gradually phase out your present high-paying services while your new freelance specialization takes precedence.

3. Why do customers come to me?

Next, consider which freelance specialty services your clients already rely on you for.

Finding clients becomes much easier if you are already well-known in some circles, and word-of-mouth marketing can be a big source of new business for you.

Of course, you don’t have to continue with the same niche in which you currently have clients, but it can be a huge advantage if you’re already known as a bit of an authority in a given area.

4. Who am I already able to effectively reach?

Once you’ve discovered a few freelance niche ideas for which clients have previously approached you, it’ll be easier to identify a freelance niche in which you have simple access to new clients.

If you already have a strong presence in a specific social media group, think about what that group would pay a freelancer for and look into comparable freelance niches.

Perhaps you have a flair for public speaking and might provide a free monthly lesson at your local library or elsewhere to increase demand for your freelance services.

Or perhaps you already have a list of prior clients to whom you could reach out with your new specialty offering to re-engage them.

5. What are the most popular freelance niches right now?

If you intend to freelance for a long time or eventually transition from freelancer to agency, it’s a good idea to do some research to determine which freelance niches are increasing and which are falling.

For example, a freelance designer could choose to specialize in UX/UI design (which is in high demand) rather than print design (which has been steadily declining for years).

Of course, some decreasing specialty also results in a sort of exodus of freelancers from that specific area, which could put you in a good position. However, with the total pie dwindling year after year, even a greater slice of pie must come to an end.
