How to Get Gigs as Freelance Journalist ? Check The Tips here !

Many journalists move to be a freelance journalist at some time in their careers. They may be fresh out of college and seeking to amass a diverse collection of clips. They might be downsized employees attempting to keep their bylines visible. Alternatively, they may be in a circumstance where they require the flexibility that freelancing can provide.

1. Create a Network

Grow your networking, many freelance journalist get the project through the personal contact. For example  if you are writing or doing interview your college  research paper, there is a possibility  the interviewee may ask you to write for him .  One project can lead to another projects.

You can also grow your networking while you are working as a journalist. Keep  the contacts of other journalist and editors, it may lead you to projects when you are freelancing.  Since the booming of social media, connecting with fellow writers will be much easier. You can build your rapport with them and ask them to introduce you to editors.

2. Research Potential Publications

As a freelance journalist before you pitch, you must do some research.  What a specific newspaper, magazine, or online publishes is it? Read some of their articles to see what themes they cover and how they write. Who is their target audience?

Seek for publications that you enjoy reading, advises Natalie Zina Walschots, a music and culture reporter in Toronto. Look for their submissions criteria online; if you can’t locate them, send an email to an editor and inquire how they prefer to be pitched.

3. Pitch on topics that other writers aren’t covering

Are you an expert on themes like school funding, political turmoil in Tbilisi, or heavy metal in South Africa? If that’s the case, you can typically carve out a niche for yourself by pitching similar topics to outlets that aren’t covering them but should be.

Once you’ve established a rapport with an editor, make sure he or she is aware of your areas of expertise in case stories requiring your knowledge arise.

4. Pitch More

Even if you have the best idea in the world, life can get in the way. Perhaps another writer pitched the identical story the day before. Perhaps your editor has become tired of the subject. Or perhaps news is about to break that will render your proposal newsworthy.

Pitch many concepts to each editor, and pitch to multiple editors at the same time, keeping this in mind. Some authors will even send the identical concept to many editors and see who bites first. As a result, be prepared for a lot of rejection.

5. Online Portfolio

A well-designed website that demonstrates who you are and what you can do can be extremely helpful in obtaining freelance work (or a job). Websites can function as online clip books or portfolios, showcasing your best writing and the themes you specialize in. (Here are some pointers on how to build a solid online portfolio.)

If you’re a successful freelance journalist, chances are you got there thanks to your extensive network. Once you’ve established contacts with a lot of newspapers and editors, it’s time to give back.

Talk to friends who are looking for freelance employment and connect them with editors that share their interests. If your editor wants you to work on something and you don’t have time, ask a fellow writer to help you.
