However, once you’ve done the initial labor, it won’t take much effort to sustain this type of money stream in the long run.

So, here’s how to work smarter (rather than harder) by using a few passive income strategies:

1. Develop and resell design templates

Selling design files online is one of the most popular passive revenue sources used by designers. Consider how many non-designers actively seek ready-made templates for a variety of purposes. Consider developing design templates that are universally beneficial, such as:

  • Presentations
  • Resumes
  • Website layouts
  • Business cards
  • Mockups
  • Stock photos & illustrations

The list could go on and on. Upload and sell your design templates on prominent marketplaces such as Creative Market, Etsy, or Shutterstock to start earning money.

2. Begin a secondary business selling products

Selling bespoke products is another excellent revenue stream for designers to consider. Print-on-demand platforms have made it easier than ever for creatives to sell merchandise without having to deal with order fulfillment (check out Printful.com or Printify.com for a few good options).

Lisa Champ recommends “mocking up your product (or a few) and asking people if they would buy it first” when designing for merch.

3. Share your knowledge

You have a lot of information to contribute as a designer. Why not help young designers by providing your important views while earning a little additional cash?

You can charge for a variety of useful products you generate, such as workshops, books, online classes, mentorship sessions, and so on.

Of course, you’ll have to invest time in developing these resources, but once they’re ready, they can be a valuable source of income in the long run.

Remember, you don’t have to be an expert to provide useful information! Many aspiring designers would benefit from learning about your background and career path.

4. Market custom design tools and assets

Do you enjoy building and experimenting with your own design tools? Other designers are likely to like using them as well.

Because creative people enjoy experimenting with new tools, you might want to try offering your own design assets to the larger creative community. Consider the following assets:

Patreon is a subscription-based website that allows authors to make money on a monthly basis by giving unique material to subscribers (also known as “patrons”). 

If you already publish content on a regular basis and enjoy communicating with your audience, you should think about starting a Patreon. You can provide subscribers with a wealth of valuable content while also having fun with it!

Streaming your work on video, creating informative blogs, or giving away design freebies are just a few examples. The possibilities are limitless!

Experiment with several passive income streams

Get out there and explore what works now that you know how to create passive income with your design abilities! It will take some trial and error to determine what works and sells well, so don’t be disheartened if you don’t make a lot of money right away. Passive income is a long-term game, so start small and figure out how to best use your creative skills!
