Music Playlist Hacks to Increase Remote Work Productivity

Music has been shown to improve both efficiency and cognitive performance, particularly in adults, beyond providing background noise. Music listening can help individuals overcome anxiety, become empowered and remain productive. You just need to know how to make a playlist that is right.

So, how to set up your playlist increase your productivity when work at home?

Start off your day with a music therapy trick. The theory is known as the iso principle, which is a method used by therapists to improve a patient’s mood. To achieve the ideal mood state, the therapist will match music to how the patient feels, and then gradually alter the songs.

The songs shouldn’t drive you into a state of efficiency at the beginning of the playlist, but they should get you there gradually, the choice of songs may vary by each person.

Start With Peaceful  Song

“When you are feeling down or lazy in the morning,  you can find  something peaceful to start”, according to  Kirsten Nelson, a music therapist at the University of Iowa Stead family children’s hospital. From there, you can bring yourself into a more motivating song to achieve the state you want.”

Start your day with peaceful music

Powerful Song

Researchers also have found that improved performance will result in a quicker track pace. Most research subjects performed better when listening to songs paced at about 121bpm in one study exploring the relationship between music tempo and productivity. Songs like   Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen and  I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston are the examples for that.

Nelson says that adding power songs at strategic points in a work playlist, such as right when the day starts. Meanwhile transitioning between tasks, and as the day ends, can help maintain motivation.

Lyrics

The decision to include lyrical tracks in a playlist should depend on the choice of the user. Although research indicates that listening to optimistic, complex music can help workers remain alert and encouraged. While narrative lyrics can confuse those who are trying to do cognitive work.

Despite song lyric is a powerful motivator, don’t automatically reach for your favorite tracks. One study found a decrease in performance while listening to songs characterized as “familiar vocal music”. The research suggests that, while it is important to listen to enjoyable music, songs that are very familiar can be distracting.

Sounds of nature

Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute recently discovered that adding a natural element could boost moods and focus. The researchers found that sounds of nature can obscure intelligible speech as well as white noise while also improving cognitive functioning, maximizing the ability to focus, and increasing overall worker satisfaction. In their study, the mountain stream sound scientists used also had such randomness that it did not distract test subjects.

Noise  Level

Researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign  found that for creative thinking, moderate noise levels are just right.

While both high and moderate levels of noise have been shown to open the minds of people to more abstract thought, high levels of noise limit the capacity of the brain to process information.

You can make  arranging music playlist every morning as ritual to calm yourself.  But  you also have to be flexible when you create it. If you don’t feel like listening to your playlist, you don’t have to.
